Reflection on Work Placement
Elliot Squyres
One of the most meaningful parts of the Fellows year for me has been my work placement experience. It’s an incredible chance to either get to explore something that you have been working towards for quite some time, or if you’re like me, to try something completely new. Over the last 8 months, I have had the opportunity to work with the Worship and Arts team at Storyhill Church. I’ve had the chance to learn what creativity in community looks like, steward the gifts of people from all walks of life, and grow my leadership skills in ways I never have before. Ministry is a complicated and unique thing to step into as a part of your vocation, so I’m really grateful to have had the chance to get my feet wet in this role while simultaneously learning so much about my strengths, struggles, and motivations through other aspects of the Davidson Fellows. Through my work, I have learned the importance of patience, deliberation, and discernment for the betterment of the community. If I’m honest, before Fellows, career-wise, I was feeling pretty lost. I have no doubt that the Lord used this experience to help me find my next steps and to grow me in ways that will serve me (and in turn, help me serve others) for the rest of my life.
